A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Adetula, has called on federal, state, and local governments to revive farm settlements across Nigeria as a strategic measure to tackle rising insecurity and enhance national food sufficiency.
Adetula, who serves as Secretary of the Tinubu Support Group (TSG), made the appeal over the weekend during a media interaction in Owo, Ondo State, stressing that adopting a modernised farming system would position Nigeria more securely in terms of food production and economic stability.
The House of Representatives aspirant for the Owo/Ose Federal Constituency said: “Enormous investment in agricultural infrastructure by all tiers of government is non-negotiable.”
He emphasised that equipping farmers with modern tools, high-yield seedlings, and comprehensive training would catalyse significant growth in Nigeria’s agricultural GDP.
“Most farmers in Ondo State are still using old seedlings with low yields compared to modern alternatives. The government must provide modern equipment, seedlings, and species to enhance productivity,” Adetula added.
He further urged the training of farmers in modern techniques, including irrigation, to ensure year-round farm produce. Adetula also highlighted the need to develop agricultural value chains by training small-scale farmers engaged in crop production, fish farming, and poultry to improve both quality and quantity of output.
Speaking on his personal investment in agriculture, Adetula disclosed that his large-scale farm in Ekiti State produces rice, palm oil, and tomatoes. He also revealed plans to establish a dairy cluster in Isuada, Owo Local Council Area, to enhance milk and beef production.
