APC has no candidate for Kano municipal reps seat, insists INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has omitted the name of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for House of Representatives in Kano Municipal Federal Constituency.

INEC had on Thursday released the final list of presidential and national assembly candidates across all the political parties ahead of the February 16 elections.

The constituency’s ticket continued to general controversy between two members of the ruling APC claiming to be the authentic candidate for the slot.

The name of Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Broadcast Media, Sha’aban Ibrahim Sharada, had earlier been submitted and recognised by INEC before the judgment of a Federal High Court in Kano nullified his candidature.

The judgment delivered by Justice Saadatu Ibrahim on January 15, this year also declared Muktari Ishaq Yakasai as the authentic candidate and directed INEC to replace Sharada with Muktari.

When contacted, INEC spokesperson in Kano State, Mallam Mohammad Garba Lawan, who confirmed the development, added that the commission was awaiting response of the ruling party on the controversial constituency.

Lawan disclosed that INEC dropped the name of the presidential aide in obedience with the court order, but that APC has not submitted the name of Muktari to the commission.

The Electoral Act, as amended, does not permit political parties to replace names of candidates within the present time limit, except in obedience of court ruling.
