Troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3, Operation Whirl Stroke, have arrested a suspected terrorist believed to be a member of a notorious gang operating across Benue and Taraba States.
The Army said the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Saawuan Wuaiyolna, was intercepted on September 18 at Takum Junction in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba while riding a motorcycle.
In a statement issued by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations for 6 Brigade, Lt. Umar Muhammad, it was revealed that Wuaiyolna is from Ateryange community in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State and is linked to the gang led by wanted kingpin Akiki Utivi, also known as “Full Fire.”
According to the Army, preliminary findings suggest the suspect had entered Wukari to monitor military operations and collect intelligence intended to aid attacks on civilians and security personnel.
“This arrest represents a significant setback for the criminal network and reaffirms our determination to deny terrorists and bandits the freedom to operate within Taraba State and its environs,” the statement read.
Commander of the 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, praised the soldiers for what he described as professional execution of the mission. He said the operation forms part of Operation Lafiya Nakowa, which is focused on dismantling armed groups and restoring peace in parts of the North Central region.
General Uwa urged residents to cooperate with the military by sharing credible intelligence. “We need the support of the public to succeed. Timely information will help us neutralize threats and ensure that communities are safe,” he said.
The Army stated that further investigations into Wuaiyolna’s role in the network are ongoing.
