The 6 Division Nigerian Army Headquarters, Port Harcourt, in a bid to improve infrastructure and enhance the welfare of its personnel, has commissioned a remodelled solar-powered roundabout and a renovated barracks block at 29 Battalion.
The event, which was attended by top military officers in the barracks and other dignitaries, marked a significant milestone in the division’s efforts to uphold high standards and improve the living conditions of its personnel.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division Nigerian Army Headquarters, Port Harcourt, emphasised the importance of cleanliness, order, and illumination across formations.
He noted that the renovation of the barracks block and the solar-powered remodelled roundabout were part of the division’s efforts to enhance safety, aesthetics, and environmental sustainability within the cantonment.
He stated that the solar-powered, remodelled roundabout is a notable achievement, providing bright lights, clear markings, and directional signs that ensure safer movement, even in poor visibility. He added that the project symbolises discipline, innovation, and professionalism within the division.
The renovated barracks block provides a more comfortable and durable environment for the troops, boosting their morale and operational readiness.
Major General Emekah emphasised that the renovation was in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s “Soldiers First” mantra and his command philosophy, which prioritises the welfare of soldiers.
He said: “This is the renovation of the soldiers’ accommodation which was in a very bad shape for the Commanding Officer who stepped in to renovate it for the comfort of the soldiers in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s Soldiers first mantra and his Command philosophy which places so much emphasis on the welfare of soldiers so that is why this being done.
“And it is not just this; others have been done in the past, and we are doing it gradually, taking one block per month or one in two months, so I think with this, it is a good development.
“The only thing we want to encourage the soldiers is to ensure that they maintain it. The army has done its part, so the soldiers should also do their part by maintaining the infrastructure.”
The GOC urged the soldiers to maintain the newly renovated infrastructure, emphasising that the army had done its part.
He assured that more renovations would be carried out gradually, with one block being renovated every month or every other month.
