The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 1 Division of the Nigerian Army in Kaduna, Maj-Gen. Adeniyi Oyebade, and religious leaders in the north have called on Nigerians, irrespective of religious inclination, to join hands and move the country forward and also promote cordial relationship as obtainable in other parts of the
world.

Speaking at the conference/award ceremony of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State chapter, Oyebade recalled the good old days when religious differences never caused disharmony among Nigerians, as they saw themselves as one united people working for the progress and unity of the country.

Also in Kaduna, a university lecturer, Dahiru Yahya, and the state Director of the Directorate of Security Service (DSS), Mr. Mustapha Sani, expressed divergent views on whether members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), otherwise known as Shiites, constitute a threat to Nigeria’s security.

At the sitting of the judicial commission set up by the state government to investigate the clash between the Army and the Shiites in Zaria last year, Yahya, who is a professor of Diplomatic History at the Bayero University (BUK), Kano blamed President Muhammadu Buhari, the Army and the state government for inability to bring to book, culprits of the alleged killing of several Shiites by soldiers.

But Sani said the group had constituted serious threat to the nation by organising military training and employing crude weapons in their operations.

The GOC, who was honoured with a Public Service Award, called on media practitioners to sensitise the people on religion and ethnic issues to ensure sustainable ethno-religious harmony across the country.
