Troops of 233 Battalion of the Nigerian Army at the weekend killed scores of Boko Haram insurgents in a fierce gun battle while repelling an attack on a military patrol team at Sasawa community in Yobe State.

Sasawa is a farming and herding settlement located 68 kilometres north of Damaturu.

The repulsion was contained in a statement by Director, Army Public Relation, Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu, yesterday in the capital.

According to him, the troops, during the two-hour gun duel, neutralised scores of insurgents to protect the community.

He said: “The insurgents were planning to attack the Babangida Market within the locality to steal food items, fuel and lay ambush for the troops on patrol.

“The officers encountered the plot during which the combat-ready patrol fought gallantly to clear the general area of the fleeing elements of Boko Haram terrorists who have been on rampage for food and logistics.

“The gallant troops overpowered and neutralised the insurgents in the fierce fight that ensued and successfully extricated themselves from the ambush.”
Chukwu further disclosed that reports also indicated that the terrorists, whose original plan was to attack and loot the aforementioned market, aborted the mission and laid ambush for the troops were on patrol of the settlement and its environs.

The military spokesman however noted that the troops had casualties, “but the present situation was under control.”

Chukwu said additional men had been deployed to reinforce the troops on patrol of Tarmuwa council area and fringes of Sasawa Forest.

“The Air Task Force is currently on an aerial surveillance to track the fleeing terrorists,” he added.
