ASUU Tackles Oshiomhole Over Confiscation, Demolishing Of UNIBEN Lecturers Houses
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole of confiscating and demolishing houses belonging to University of Benin lecturers.
Addressing a press conference in Bauchi yesterday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), the Zonal Coordinator of the union, Prof. Nanmwa Voncir said that they wanted to draw the attention of Nigerians over the issue.
The union alleged that the governor has transformed from a ‘Comrade’ into a tyrant because of political power.
“The ‘Comrade’ Governor of Edo State has confiscated and demolished houses belonging to the University of Benin with sitting occupants. Even when the matter is in court, the governor has gone ahead and completely demolished the properties of the university.”
He stated that the governor’s action amounted to tyranny, adding that the land was also allocated to individuals after the demolition.
The union, therefore, said that by his action, the governor has allowed private interest to override public interest, which it said is unbecoming of a man who claims to protect the working class people.
“We call on the Governor of Edo State to forthwith rebuild the demolished properties and return same to University of Benin without delay. We also appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian people to call the “Comrade” Governor to order,” the union added.
