The ongoing trial of an undergraduate, Chidinma Ojukwu and others over the murder of Usifo Ataga,  the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, could not go ahead yesterday, due to Ill-health of the defence counsel.

Ojukwu is facing trial alongside her sister, Chioma Egbuchu and one Adedapo Quadri, before Justice Yetunde Adesanya of a Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS).

Lagos State government had filed a nine-count charge against the defendants.

Ojukwu and Quadri are facing count one to eight, bordering on conspiracy, murder, stabbing, forgery, forging of bank statements and stealing, while Egbuchu is facing the ninth count of stealing of iPhone 7 belonging to Ataga.

Ojukwu and Quadri, allegedly conspired and murdered Ataga on June 15, 2021, by stabbing him several times on the neck and chest with a knife at No. 19, Adewale Oshin Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State.

The duo were also alleged to have committed forgery by procuring and making bank account statements, purported to have been made by the deceased.

However, their scheduled trial was yesterday, stalled  again by the ill-health of the defence counsel.

On May 12 , the case didn’t go one due to  a change of counsel by  the third defendant (Egbuchu).

The new counsel, Mr. Ngozi Akandu, had prayed the court for time, so that more documents could be served on  him as well as requested time to study them.

When the case was called yesterday, counsel to Ojukwu, Mr. Onwuka Egwu, read to the court a letter written by  Akandu, notifying the court that he was ill, and asking for an adjournment.

Responding, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions (DDPP), Mrs, Adenike Oluwafemi, did not oppose the application, while other counsel aligned with prosecution counsel’s submission.

The trial judge subsequently adjourned the matter to July 7, 2022.
