Bauchi Emirate withdraws senator’s chieftaincy over alleged disrespect for governor
The Bauchi Emirate Council has stripped the Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Shehu Buba, of his chieftaincy, citing alleged disrespect for Governor Bala Mohammed.
In similar cases, the palace has, in the past, withdrawn the titles of erstwhile Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, an ex-minister and elder statesman, Muhammad Bello Kirfi removed as Wazirin Bauchi and one-time member of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Shehu Abdullahi, dethroned as Wakilin Birnin Bauchi.
Senator Buba had openly faulted Governor Mohammed’s criticism of President Bola Tinubu and his policies. He also accused the governor of short-changing the residents.
However, the emirate council, in a letter on Wednesday, ordered the lawmaker to stop wielding his traditional title.
The correspondence dated August 14, written in Hausa language and signed by the Council Secretary, Nasiru Musa, Explained that the decision was one of the outcomes of a meeting of the council held same day and chaired by the Emir of Bauchi, Dr Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu.
The council specifically accused the legislator of “disrespecting and humiliating the Bauchi State Governor,” an action seen to be at “variance with the teachings and culture of Bauchi Emirate.”
