Police beef up security to restore normalcy
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, yesterday, announced that there are over 10,000 “well-armed” bandits that are attacking villagers in communities in Alkaleri Local Council of the state.
Mohammed submitted when he visited the internally displaced persons (IDPs) who fled Mansur, Yalau, Futuk, Duguri, and Gwana communities of the council area due to recent attacks.
The governor, while sympathising with the IDPs sheltered in a government learning facility at Kashere council area of neighbouring Gombe State, described the situation as “very bad.”
Mohammed, who appealed for urgent intervention from the Federal Government, said his people have been pushed out by about “10,000 well-armed bandits.”
He added that the bandits were recruiting locals and outsiders, including former illegal miners.
Mohammed lauded his Gombe counterpart for hosting the IDPs and vowed to work with security agencies to protect the affected communities.
Earlier, the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, said more security personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order in the affected areas.
He assured residents of Mansur to remain calm amid attacks in their neighbourhood, which led to many fleeing their ancestral homes, saying his operatives have been deployed with adequate weapons to restore peace.
Also addressing journalists in Bauchi, spokesperson for the state police command, SP Habib Nafiu, confirmed that there has been a resurgence of security concerns in Gwana, Digare, and Kafin Duguri in Alkaleri Local Council.
He said after a thorough security assessment, the command, in collaboration with other security agencies, has initiated a massive deployment of joint security personnel to the affected communities to suppress the criminal elements.
