Bauchi State Government has distributed 345 tricycles to beneficiaries of its Kaura Economic Empowerment Program to assuage the hardship of the ban of motorcycles in the State.

Bauchi State Government has distributed 345 tricycles to beneficiaries of its Kaura Economic Empowerment Program to assuage the hardship of the ban of motorcycles in the State.

The State Governor, Bala Mohammed while addressing the beneficiaries on Wednesday at the distribution ground said that the activities of the motorcycles were banned in accordance with the guidelines given by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Mohammed said that the State has ordered for not less than 1,000 units of Keke NAPEP of which the 345 has been delivered to reduce the transportation challenge.

“Government has banned the operation of Ashaba (motorcycles) for the purpose of security and health. In the alternative, the government has started the purchase of 1,000 units of Keke NAPEP to replace the ban.

“Ashaba has been banned not because we intend to criminalize poverty, or the ways and means people put food on the table. We are conscious of the poverty in this State and the need to provide some subsistence for our people.”

He said it took the government “a great pain” to sit together with the stakeholders of the State to ban the use of motorcycles statewide temporarily, pending the time Covid-19 is over.

The beneficiaries of the tricycles would payback the money installment through the state ministry of Cooperative and SME in 24 months without interest.

Mohammed announced that similar empowerment program were on the pipelines, saying his administration is working on the purchase of commercial vehicles.
