Bauchi spends N5.9b on vehicles in 6 months, half of that on public schools

Between January and July 2025, the Bauchi State Government spent N5.91 billion on motor vehicles, buses, and vans, twice the amount it spent on public schools.

An analysis of the state’s budget performance document for the second quarter of 2025 by The Guardian’s correspondent revealed that the state government made motor vehicle purchases worth the sum of N5,824,289,080. It also spent N3,900,000 and N83,870,000 on the purchase of buses and vans, respectively, during that period.

These purchases were classified as “purchase of fixed assets – general” under the “total expenditure by economic classification” section of the state’s budget performance document for the second quarter of 2025.

A further analysis also revealed that N9,369,588,364.48 was allocated for the purchase of motor vehicles for the 2025 fiscal year, and the state government had spent 62.2% of that amount in the first half of the year.

Rehabilitation and repairs, as well as the construction of public schools, on the other hand, received allocations of N7,586,500,000.00 and N8,682,500,000.00 for the 2025 fiscal year, respectively.

But as of the second quarter of the year, the state government had not spent half of the amount it allocated to public schools for the purpose.

As of the second quarter of 2025, only 18.2% of the total allocated amount for the rehabilitation and repair of public schools had been utilised, amounting to N1,378,804,494.39.

Similarly, N1,162,410,792.23, representing 13.4% of the allocated funds, was spent on the construction of public schools within the same period.
