United Nations Children’s Fund and Bauchi State Ministry of Health have partnered to end the high rate of child mortality in the state, saying further that the state has the highest rate of 87 per 1,000 of child mortality.

At the launch of the programme, Bauchi State Every Newborn Action Plan (BaSENAP) yesterday, a consultant from the state hospital management board, Dr. Robbinson Yusuf while presenting a paper on action plan revealed this and blamed the development on the government’s ill plan. The programme, which was organised by the Ministry and sponsored by UNICEF and the European Union focused on the increasing improper delivery and treatment at childbirth in the country. Child mortality rate in the state stands at 87 per 1,000 live births, under-five mortality is at 161 per 1,000 live births while national averages stand at 54 per 1,000 and 120 per 1000 respectively.

He added that delivery in health facility was key in reducing maternal, newborn death and stillbirths but said in 2017, only about 17 per cent births took place in a health facility as opposed to 82.5 per cent taking place at home.

The UNICEF’s Health Specialist in Bauchi, Dr. Halima Abdu reinstated the Agency’s commitment to development of every child and called on the government to do more in saving the lives of children.
