Benue, Nasarawa governorship tribunal commences sitting in Lafia
The tribunal set up to hear petitions from the 2023 governorship elections in Benue and Nasarawa states held its first sitting in Lafia, yesterday.
It came barely 24 hour after governors of both states took the oath of office.
Justice Ezekiel Oyeyemi Ajayi chairs the three-man panel.
The sitting featured pre-hearing, ahead of main hearing, where the substances of cases would be heard from the two states.
Speaking to journalists, counsel to David Ombugadu and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Joe-Kyari Gadzama (SAN), said all cases and lawyers from Benue and Nasarawa were at the tribunal for the pre-hearing.
“The tribunal would commence hearing of substances of the cases in subsequent sittings. We, as counsel of the same profession and ethics, are encouraged to work together for the interest of justice alone. We are to promote democracy, rule of law and constitutionalism,” he said.
He appealed to all parties to remain peaceful and law abiding.
Ombugadu is challenging Independent National Electoral Commission’s declaration of Abdullahi Sule of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the Nasarawa governorship poll.
Also, Titus Uba of the PDP is challenging the victory of Rev. Fr Hyacinth Alia of APC in Benue.
