Beyond Money: Summit targets communication gaps threatening marriages

Dr Adetutu Afolabi

What couples often dismiss as money problems in marriage may actually be rooted in poor communication, unmet expectations, upbringing and unspoken fears, the convener of the Marriage & Money Summit, Dr Adetutu Afolabi, has said.

The second edition of the summit, aimed at helping couples build healthier relationships and achieve financial stability, will hold on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Detutu Event Place, Ogudu, Lagos.

The convener said the event themed “The Power Couple Blueprint: Rewiring Money Habits, Communication Patterns and Partnership Dynamics,” will bring together married and engaged couples, relationship experts, financial professionals and counsellors to address the pressures confronting modern African households.

Dr Afolabi explained the summit would help couples identify the underlying issues behind financial disagreements and develop healthier ways of communicating and managing money together.

”Many marital conflicts that appear to be about money are often rooted in communication, expectations, upbringing and unspoken fears. This summit will help couples recognise these patterns, make better financial decisions and build their homes as true partners.”

The free one-day event, she said, will examine financial disagreements, conflicting money habits, changing gender and economic roles, poor communication and the absence of effective financial planning among couples.

It will feature expert-led sessions, candid conversations with couples, practical financial guidance and the Marriage Unfiltered fireside chat, while participants will also have access to professional relationship counsellors.

The convener said the sessions would help couples understand each other’s financial backgrounds, align their goals and establish healthier systems for managing household finances.

She also announced that 10 selected households will receive financial grants as part of the summit’s commitment to supporting families beyond the event

Afolabi said strengthening individual households was critical to building a stronger economy and society.

“The economy begins at home. When households are emotionally healthy and financially stable, they are better equipped to raise secure children, build lasting family businesses and contribute meaningfully to society.”

The summit is open to married couples, engaged partners, singles preparing for marriage and anyone seeking a healthier understanding of marriage, money and partnership.
