Beyond Record: Nigerian woman’s 144-hour bible reading

Habibat Salawudeen Ihiovi-Jack

As endurance record attempts continue to gain momentum in Nigeria, a woman in Rivers State is taking a different path—one rooted in faith rather than physical endurance

Habibat Salawudeen Ihiovi-Jack is attempting to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest Holy Bible reading marathon, embarking on a 144-hour challenge aimed at encouraging Christians to develop a deeper relationship with the Scriptures.

The marathon, tagged “144 Hours in the Word,” commenced on June 22 at Novotel in Port Harcourt and is expected to run until July 2, subject to Guinness World Records verification and guidelines.

Unlike many recent marathon attempts centred on cooking, dancing, or other skills, Habibat’s challenge focuses on reading the Bible aloud continuously, with only the official rest periods permitted under Guinness World Records regulations.

As of Saturday, she had crossed the 100-hour mark, moving into the final stretch of the week-long challenge. Videos circulating on social media show her reading from a lectern and seated at a desk, while digital countdown timers track her progress. Family members, church members, and supporters have remained at the venue, cheering her on throughout the marathon.

Speaking about the initiative, Habibat described it as more than an attempt to secure international recognition. She said the project is a faith-driven mission designed to inspire believers to spend more time in God’s Word and rediscover the importance of daily Bible study.

Her church has also thrown its weight behind the initiative. Senior Pastor of Summit Bible Churches Worldwide, Dr. Andy Osakwe, described the marathon as a spiritual assignment rather than simply a Guinness World Record bid, expressing hope that it would ignite renewed passion for Scripture among Christians within and outside Nigeria.

The attempt has generated significant attention online, where many Nigerians have praised the initiative and offered prayers for its successful completion. It also adds another chapter to the country’s growing fascination with endurance challenges, many of which have attracted global attention in recent years.

Nigeria has witnessed a surge in Guinness World Record attempts since the global success of chef Hilda Baci’s cook-a-thon. Since then, individuals from different professions and backgrounds have embarked on marathon challenges ranging from cooking and painting to sewing, reading, and other specialised skills, often using the platform to promote personal causes, raise awareness, or inspire communities.

Habibat’s attempt also follows the achievement of Nigerian reader Samson Ajao, who earned Guinness World Records recognition after completing a 215-hour reading marathon in 2024, surpassing the previous record of 124 hours.

Whether or not the 144-hour Bible reading marathon results in a new Guinness World Record, supporters say the initiative has already succeeded in drawing attention to the place of Scripture in everyday life and encouraging many to return to regular Bible reading.
