Oboghoro community in Riverine Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State on Sunday evening came alive with a colourful carnival as residents and visitors gathered for the renaissance celebration of BINI Riva Life, an initiative celebrating riverine connectivity, culture, commerce and the emerging opportunities in the blue economy.

The event, held as part of activities marking the fifth coronation anniversary of the Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, transformed the riverine community into a hub of cultural celebration, sporting activities and economic interaction.

The carnival-like gathering at Oboghoro therefore served not only as a celebration of the Olu of Warri’s fifth year on the throne, but also as a broader showcase of the cultural wealth, entrepreneurial potential and communal bonds that exist across Nigeria’s riverine communities.

The community was adorned in a festive atmosphere as participants and residents celebrated the rich heritage of riverine communities and the vital role of waterways in connecting people, supporting livelihoods and promoting cultural exchange.

The BINI Riva Life celebration featured a wide range of activities, including fishing festivals, river games, riverside runs, seafood market festivals, cultural and historical exhibitions, museum experiences, art, photography and lifestyle displays.

The festival was designed to evoke the unity and oneness represented by flowing water, which connects diverse communities while supporting natural ecosystems, commerce and human livelihoods.

Organisers said the initiative was aimed at drawing attention to the enormous potential of Nigeria’s riverine communities, particularly in areas such as fisheries, tourism, transportation, sports, creative industries and other components of the blue economy.

Speaking on the sporting activities, the BINI Riva Life Games Coordinator, Uchie Chijoke, described the traditional games as impressive, noting that participants competed in several events designed to showcase the skills and traditions of riverine communities.

Chijoke said, “We had a lot of games, the fishing prizes, we had six winners. We had a marathon race. We had short distance and long distance race. We had the River Games, the 10-man paddling.”

The fishing competition attracted participants who competed for prizes, while the marathon and river games provided opportunities for youths and other participants to demonstrate their sporting abilities.

The 10-man paddling competition, in particular, added colour to the celebration, reinforcing the close relationship between the people and their waterways.
