UNEMPLOYMENT that often befalls graduates of tertiary institutions in the country would soon be a thing of the past as the Bank of Industry (BoI) has rolled out a scheme that would encourage Nigeria graduates to become employers of labour.

Jobs-in-Nigeria--UNEMPLOYMENT that often befalls graduates of tertiary institutions in the country would soon be a thing of the past as the Bank of Industry (BoI) has rolled out a scheme that would encourage Nigeria graduates to become employers of labour.

Rather than becoming a job, seeker, the programme, if well embracedby the corps members who are presently undergoing training in various trades, BoI believed would go a long way to halt them from roaming the streets in search of employment after completing their service.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive of the bank, Rasheed Olaoluwa, disclosed this while flagging off the Graduate Entrepreneurship Fund Capacity Building Programme of selected corps members in Jalingo, Taraba State.

Represented by the regional manager of the bank, T. Aliyu, the managing director is of the view that the programme would address the entrepreneurship capacity gap of the young NYSC members.”

He is also optimistic that the programme would as well ensure “ viability and sustainability of the businesses of the young graduates through effective hand holding and monitoring.”

A total of 1000 candidates were shortlisted for the three-day capacity building programme at the NYSC orientation camp located along Wukari road. At the end of the exercise, participants will be required to submit their loans application to BoI along with their business plans.

The funding will be in form of loans to cover the cost of equipment and working capital requirement of the proposed projects. The loan to each of the beneficiary will be a maximum of N2 million administered at a single digit interest rate of 9% per annum, with tenor ranging between 3-4 years.

Earlier, the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General J.B Olawumi, who was represented by the state coordinator of NYSC, Tumba Freeman, said beneficiaries need not to be afraid as the programme would be sustained.

Citing the past where corps members who are into business end up being stranded due to lack of funds to sustain their ideas, the reverse as observed by him is now the case noting that this development is a “ major turning point for the implementation of the Programme and a huge relief for the managers of the scheme.”

He encouraged the beneficiaries to make use of the opportunity by making themselves available to all the resource persons assigned with the responsibility of training them.

Some of the beneficiaries, who spoke with The Guardian, are of the view that the opportunity presented to them, would definitely assist them to be self-reliant after their service year.

The programme is holding in Abia, Delta, Osun, Lagos, Plateau, Katsina and Taraba states.
