British-Nigerian becomes UK’s youngest mayor at 29

British-Nigerian Princess Opeyemi Bright, 29, etched her name in the history books by becoming the UK’s youngest mayor, championing diversity and youth empowerment.

Opeyemi was picked as the youngest mayor in the United Kingdom after assuming office as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, thus marking a historic milestone for both the Nigerian diaspora.
Her appointment also set the tone for a new dawn regarding youth representation in British politics.

“This is nothing short of God’s grace. I’m proud to serve my borough, and as a proud Nigerian, I will represent my heritage with humility and excellence. May this journey inspire others to lead, serve, and rise,” Bright said in her acceptance speech.

Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Bright began her political career at 22 as a councillor, focusing on youth empowerment, social inclusion, and economic opportunities in her community.

Her inauguration on May 16 was celebrated as a symbol of diversity and the increasing presence of Nigerians in public service.

She follows her mother, Dr. Afolasade Bright, who was Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007, and her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, a senior minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

Bright’s achievement adds to a growing list of Nigerians making significant strides in global politics. Prominent figures such as Kemi Badenoch, the Leader of the UK Conservative Party; Chi Onwurah, Labour MP; Canadian Minister Uzoma Asagwara; and U.S. Congresswoman Esther Agbaje are already establishing themselves in global politics.
