U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and President Buhari held talks Wednesday on the sidelines of the climate change conference, COP22, in Marrakech, Morocco.
Buhari told Kerry that his government’s ongoing war against corruption was tough. He, however, stressed: “It is a war we are determined to win, and which we will win. People of goodwill are behind us. Countries like America and many others are with us, and we will surely win.”
He also updated Kerry on the fight against insurgency in the northeast of the country and efforts being made to tackle humanitarian problems caused by the crisis.
On the unrest in the Niger Delta area, resulting in sabotage of critical oil and power installations, Buhari said a resolution was underway.
The president said Nigeria was happy with America’s support on different fronts.
On the state of the economy, he said problems were being “frontally tackled,” adding: “We will overcome them soon.”
Kerry expressed delight at the successes of the Buhari administration, pledging continued U.S. support in Nigeria’s bid to overcome security, humanitarian, political and economic challenges.
With the Obama administration leaving office January, Kerry said he would love to continue engaging with Nigeria, even in a private capacity.
