SECURITY aides to the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari yesterday barred the African Independent Television (AIT) from covering his engagement until certain pertinent issues are resolved.

Yesterday, the AIT crew who were on ground to cover the visits of dignitaries to the president-elect at the Defence House in Abuja were asked to go because “they constitute security risk.”

However, the AIT crew, alongside that of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) which also got the order disregarded it.

AIT is one of the media outfits that ran several advertorials against the president-elect in the build- up to the just concluded general elections.

Buhari’s spokesman, Garba Shehu justifed the action saying it was based on concerns over security and ethical standards raised by the family of the President- elect.

He said: “Yes you can quote me that I said that we have asked them to step aside and that we are resolving the issues of ethics and standards with them. AIT has been asked to stay aside based on security and family concerns. In addition, the Buhari family has decided that they will have to resolve some issues relating to issues of standard and ethics.

“We will be talking with them to try and resolve the matter but for now the station has been asked to stay aside because like I said, there are some family and security concerns. They have been asked to step down their coverage until we resolve the matter with them on ethics and standards, “ he said explained.

Shehu faulted the notion that the NTA was involved adding: “Its crew remain free to attend the events of the President-elect and to cover it.”
