Human rights activist, Mr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, said even if he does not support Mrs. Buhari’s comments, the President does not need to know every Nigerian one-on-one before working with them, his (Buhari’s) response that his wife belongs to the kitchen “is an insult to womanhood and public embarrassment to his wife in particular.”
He added: “Buhari’s comments re-echo the saying that ‘women’s education ends in the kitchen’ and it is inappropriate for such comments to come from the President of Nigeria, where women have held several key positions in government, did well and are still doing well.
“Such comments from the President could discourage parents from sending their female children to school and go further to demoralising the Chibok schoolgirls, who have started regaining their freedom, especially the recently freed 21, who may think that whatever level of education they attain through federal government scholarship would end them in the kitchen.
“Besides, given such response, whether it was a joke or with seriousness, while standing beside his host, the German Chancellor, who herself is a female and who is supposed to be in the kitchen, according to Mr. President’s comment, sends wrong signal to the female folks.
“It would thus be important if Mr. President makes necessary retractions to addressing the damage that his comments may have caused his wife and the opposite sex.”
