Buhari’s legacy should inspire a just, united Nigeria – Coalition

A coalition of Christian and Muslim clerics under the Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace (IDFP) has said that the legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari should serve as a moral compass for citizens and leaders alike.

While describing him as a national leader who served Nigeria with patriotism, the forum urged Nigerians to strive toward building a nation founded on peace, justice, and unity.

In a joint statement signed by its Co-Chairs, Rev. Abainitus Akila Hamman and Dr. Yusuf Yakubu Arrigasiyyu, the Forum extended heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family and the nation, praying for divine comfort in this period of national mourning.

The forum, made up of 120 Christian and Muslim religious and traditional leaders from across the country, noted Buhari’s role in national development and urged Nigerians to remember him for his commitment to the unity and progress of Nigeria.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died at the age of 82, was buried in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, under Islamic rites.

A retired Major General, Buhari first ruled Nigeria as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later returned as a democratically elected president in 2015, serving two terms until 2023.

“With heartfelt sorrow, the Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace (IDFP) mourns the passing of Former President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR). We pray that the Almighty grants him eternal peace and comforts his family, loved ones, and the nation in this period of grief,” the forum said.

“As a leader who served Nigeria with dedication, may his life and legacy continue to inspire us to build a nation rooted in peace, justice, and unity.”

During his presidency, Buhari was known for his anti-corruption stance, investments in infrastructure, and efforts to combat terrorism and insurgency, particularly in the North-East.

However, his administration was also marked by economic challenges and criticism over issues of insecurity and perceived lopsided appointments.

The group urged Nigerians to see Buhari’s passing as a moment for sober reflection and renewed commitment to the values of tolerance, justice, and national peace.
