Building collapse: LASBCA boss urges Lagosians to report distressed buildings around them
To curb the menace of building collapse in Lagos State, General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Arc. Gbolahan Oki, has called on residents to report any distressed and non-conforming building noticed around them to avoid human casualties.
Oki, who stated this during a visit to a partially collapsed building at No. 26, Adeleye Street, Ladi Lak, Bariga, Lagos, noted that preliminary investigation revealed the scaffolding of a tank at a two-storey on Ayinke Street gave way and crashed into the bungalow at Adeleye Street.
Whilst commiserating with families of the victims, the LABSCA boss urged Lagosians to be safety conscious and also be their brothers’ keeper by reporting any illegal construction going on around them as the government cannot do the job alone.
Oki also stated that the government has made it easier for Lagosians to report any illegal building noticed around them through the establishment of District Offices in all the 20 Local Councils and 37 Local Council Development Areas in the state, a move initiated to bring government nearer to the people and for wider coverage.
He further reiterated government’s commitment to safeguarding life and property through adequate and prompt monitoring, identification of conformity and non-conforming buildings and enforcement of the agency’s mandates.
Meanwhile, the collapsed two-storey building has been sealed up pending further investigation.
