Bayero University, Kano has rescheduled all academic activities and the ongoing examinations slated for tomorrow Thursday 7th, November 2022 following a lecture-free day and protest declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

A statement signed by the secretary, Information and publication, on behalf of the registrar, Bala Abdullahi noted that academic activities are postponed to a later date.

In the notice cited on the university’s bulletin, the management informed faculties, and departments of the rescheduled examinations slated for Thursday to Tuesday 8th December 2022, and the urgent need to comply henceforth.

Vice-chairperson of ASUU, BUK branch, Dr. Sagir Saleh told our correspondent that the union opted to protest and declare an academic free day to show “total rejection” of the “amputated” salary paid to members for the month of September.

Dr Saleh insisted that ASUU was embarking on the protest as a warning notice and would not hesitate to take fresh action that will be grievous to the system.

He said ASUU will use the occasion to submit a protest letter to the Vice Chancellor for onward delivery to the Minister of education.

“We have called off the strike because of the court order and the intervention of the speaker of the house of representatives. The promise was that all our entitlement would be paid but to our dismay, the Federal government decided to pay half salary for the month of September.

“It is upon this action that ASUU called a NEC meeting where resolutions were made. Part of the resolutions are all branches should embark on one day free academic work. On that day, we would hold special Congress and later proceed on local protest within the university and later visit the Vice Chancellor.”

Meanwhile, the coordinator of National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), BUK branch, Dr. Usman Bashir disassociated members of NAMDA from the planned protest.

Dr. Bashir stressed that though members of NAMDA suffered the same persecution meted by the Federal government, joining any struggle with ASUU would further worsen the academic session.

Bashir noted, “We are not going on any protest with ASUU because we are no longer in the same academic union. We have our peculiar matter and we prefer to address our issues separately.

“Remember, the faculties of health, health sciences and dentritary run different program. The students have lost several period of their academic session. So, we can not afford to waste any academic session any more.”
