The Minister of Defence and former Jigawa State governor, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, delivered his polling unit for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Saturday’s by-election for the Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, contrary to earlier reports suggesting otherwise.
Earlier results had shown that APC lost at Polling Unit 001, located in the same primary school and wrongly tagged as the polling booth where the minister cast his vote.
The minister voted at his Polling Unit 002 at Babura Kofar Arewa Primary School, where the APC polled 188 votes while the PDP polled 164 votes.
The confusion arose after results from Polling Unit 001, located within the same primary school, were mistakenly reported as those of Badaru’s polling unit, giving the impression that APC had lost in the ward.
The by-election was held under heavy security, with personnel of the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) on duty. The Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, also participated in the exercise in Jigawa.
Declaring the overall results, Returning Officer, Prof. Isma’il Ibrahim, announced APC’s candidate, Mukhtar Rabiu, as the winner with 38,449 votes.
He defeated PDP’s Isah Auwalu Manzo, who scored 13,519, and NNPP’s Sabo Salisu, who got 2,931 votes.
The seat became vacant following the death of Hon. Isa Dogonyaro, who represented Babura/Garki Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives until May 2024.
