Cabinet formation, others for consideration as induction of govs-elect holds

Cabinet formation, vetting, ethics, staffing identification of critical skills and capacity are some of the issues to be on the front burner at an induction of governors-elect on Monday, in Abuja, by the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF).

Cabinet formation, vetting, ethics, staffing identification of critical skills and capacity are some of the issues to be on the front burner at an induction of governors-elect on Monday, in Abuja, by the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF).

The programme is to empower the incoming and returning state chief with special tools to usher them into office in a seamless manner, and assist them move away from campaigns to governance.

The NGF, in a statement by its spokesman, AbdulRazak Bello-Bakindo, said President Muhammadu Buhari is to give the keynote address.

The occasion affords the governors an opportunity to share experiences and compare notes to further strengthen service delivery to the Nigerian people at the subnational level,” the body noted.

To inspire the governors to hit the ground running, speakers have been invited across the globe, including Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams and two former American governors, Terry McAuliffe of the State of Virginia and O’Malley Martin Joseph of Maryland.

Also to speak at the event is Prof. Peter Anyang Nyongo, Governor of the Kisumu County in Kenya, who transformed the East African nation’s hospital fund to a national health insurance fund, reduced poverty and brought the county to compete in poverty reduction, education and infrastructure with modern cities around the globe.

Also invited are erstwhile British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Secretary General of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa, Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi and President William Ruto of Kenya.

Nearer home, Director General of World trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Deputy Secretary General of United Nations, Amina Mohammed and President of African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, would also bring their experiences to bear on the occasion.

Others include National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd), who will be speaking on managing security in the states, with Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai, Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba and Director General of Department of State Services (DSS) serving as panelists.
