Ahead of 2023 general elections, members of the Centre for Anti-corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) have condemned public officers who loot the treasury, insisting that electorates must vote for only candidates with credible antecedents.

Speaking at a consultative meeting with delegates from Ikorodu division of Lagos, CACOL Chairman, Debo Adeniran, expressed concern over the manner public office holders plunder the commonwealth of the nation.

He said: “Don’t allow corrupt political officers to pollute your community. Ask your elected representatives questions. Be courageous and articulate. Name, nail, shame and shun corrupt leaders. We need to prioritise transparency and accountability so that in the next dispensation, we can boldly say that we have done our part.”

Speaking further, he advised Nigerians to ask questions about projects executed by elected officers, urging them to visit project sites and demand specifications.

He said through its governance, accountability, transparency education initiative, the group is engaging units of community leaders and residents in various councils on how to hold public officers accountable.

He described corruption as any act of dishonesty adding that CACOL aims to change the narrative in Nigeria by bolstering support for anti-corruption and social inclusion among critical groups and stakeholders.

According to him, corruption has made Nigerians poorer, thereby making some people go into crime because they could not meet their social and moral obligations in society.

Participants at the event commended the initiatives of the group while some expressed their readiness to become members.

Formerly Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL is an aggregate of human rights, community based and civil society organisations, with anti-corruption agenda across Nigeria. It is a non-political, non-religious, non-sectarian and non-profit coalition.

The group sets for itself the tasks of promoting openness in governance and using any available means to cause relevant authorities to probe and bring to book all corrupt leaders both in public and private institutions.
