CAN blames poor leadership for Nigeria’s exclusion from UN council

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the United States.

.Says it’s beginning of isolation

Nigeria’s failure to secure a seat among African countries in the recent election into the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council, last Tuesday, may be the beginning of its woes among the comity of nations.

Secretary General of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Sunday Oibe, stated, yesterday, that the country would be isolated by other countries because of the poor leadership and democratic records it has exhibited.

On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, the UN elected 15 new member-states into its Human Rights Council and retained some countries that have served in the council.

After the ballots were cast and counted, the Assembly President, Dennis Francis, announced Albania, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burundi, China, Côte d’Ivoire, Cuba, Dominican Republic, France, Ghana, Indonesia, Japan, Kuwait, Malawi and Netherlands as elected to serve for three years, beginning January 2024.

Meanwhile, Malawi topped the votes for African nations, with 182 votes, followed by Côte d’Ivoire (181), Ghana (179), Burundi (168), and Nigeria (3). In Asia and Pacific, Indonesia secured 186 votes, followed by Kuwait (183), Japan (175) and China (154).

Reacting to Nigeria’s dismal performance at the election, Oibe said: “Bad leadership has not caused Nigeria and Nigerians anything, but Nigerians have injured themselves because of greed.

“This is just the beginning of sorrows and suffering yet to come. Who has bewitched us to become this docile and dumb in the face of obvious and intentional lack of capacity and willingness to lead the country to the promised land?”

The CAN scribe slammed our weakness to do the right thing, adding: “See how corruption, nepotism and absence of integrity in many institutions of government has destroyed the reputation of our country. Before now, some of us were of the opinion that the country’s situation was redeemable; but as things stand, it might take only divine help to pull the country out of the woods.

“Which institution of government is without issues? When our children in higher institutions cheat during examinations, university professors will cause such a student to be sent packing. But look at the irony of our nation, it’s the university professors that are being used to cheat and steal people’s mandates during elections and you expect Nigeria to be respected?”

Until Nigerians are able to break away from the sentiment of tribe, religion, ethnicity, etc and unite around a common goal of development, their dream of a prosperous nation will ever remain an illusion, he asserted.
