The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has urged the residents of Lagos to be safety-conscious as they celebrate Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Speaking at the second edition of its Christmas carol event with the theme: ‘Immanuel’, the Permanent Secretary, Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said: ‘’It is good to celebrate Christmas and New year, but everyone should be careful in this period to avoid disasters.’’
Osanyintolu pleaded with residents to be law-abiding and celebrate peaceafully. He said: “It is good to celebrate but let us do it moderately. Let us ensure we abide with the rules and regulations. Let us put safety into place so that we won’t have casualties in the festive period.” said.
He assured that ‘’LASEMA is always ready to respond to any challenges or emergency at any point in time,’’ adding: “If there is any emergency or casualty, call us on our emergency numbers 112 and 767 and we will respond immediately.’’
Also, the Lagos State Safety Commission (LSC) and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), yesterday, began a joint safety and environmental advocacy campaign during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
This was disclosed in a statement jointly signed by the Director General of LSC, Lanre Mojola, and the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi yesterday.
They said that ‘’Lagos State Government is committed to putting adequate measures in place to ensure that residents and holiday makers have a safe, fun-filled, and memorable experience during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.’’
” To this end, the general public is, hereby, notified that in a bid to facilitate a hazard and accident-free Yuletide and ensure strict compliance to extant safety and environment laws, regulations and guidelines, the Lagos State Safety Commission (LSC) in conjunction with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) will be carrying out joint monitoring and enforcement operations across the State, especially at social centres,” the statement read.
The statement added that the centres include bars and lounges, event centres, night clubs, parks, gardens, children play areas amongst other locations with high human traffic.
‘’The agencies have also commenced a safety and environmental advocacy campaign program tagged ‘Socialize Responsibly’ aimed at promoting safety and environmental awareness and moderation during the yuletide. This advocacy aims to touch on overcrowding, fire safety, noise pollution amongst others.
” Consequently, members of the public are, hereby, encouraged to notify the aforementioned agencies of any safety and or environmental infractions observed during the festivities through the following numbers: 07000SAFETY for Safety Commission and 07046351295 for LASEPA.”
