Chukwu highlights economic benefits of Abia Airport

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti was joined by stakeholders, across the nation for the groundbreaking ceremony for the much-anticipated Abia International Airport.

The event which marked a significant milestone in the state’s infrastructural development and is set to redefine the economic landscape of Abia.

In a Press Briefing in Umuahia, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Due Process and Public Procurement Bureau,Dr Oluebube Chukwu, emphasized the economic and developmental benefits the airport would bring to the state, describing it as a “game-changer” for Abia and the entire southeastern region. He noted that the construction of the airport would open up Abia to new economic opportunities, boost trade, attract investors, and provide a significant boost to the state’s tourism industry.

Chukwu who highlighted that the airport would create thousands of jobs both directly and indirectly, from construction to operations and support the growth of key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and services,pointed out that Abia, which is already a hub for commerce and industrial activities, would experience a surge in investments and trade once the airport is operational.

He added that the airport will also serve as a gateway for businesses and entrepreneurs to access local and international markets more easily.

“The Abia International Airport will facilitate smoother connectivity, enhance business operations and provide Abia with a competitive edge. It will be a vital asset to the economy, reducing the reliance on airports in neighboring states and promoting Abia as an investment destination.

“The airport when completed, will also address transportation challenges within the region, facilitating the movement of goods and people, particularly for business owners and manufacturers in the state’s industrial hub of Aba. This improvement in logistics is expected to reduce the cost of doing business, promote economic activities, and attract more industries to the state”, Chukwu said.

He stated that the development of the airport further aligns with the state’s vision of enhancing infrastructure and creating a conducive environment for business and economic growth.

“With the commencement of the groundbreaking ceremony, tomorrow, 17th of December, 2024, the construction of Abia Airport is now officially underway. The state government is optimistic that the airport will be completed within the projected timeline, further enhancing Abia’s position as a key economic player in southeastern Nigeria.

“Once operational, the airport is expected to significantly boost regional trade, ease transportation challenges and foster job creation,while opening new doors for international tourism and investments”, he explained further.
