CIPM to tackle unemployment, launches productive employment template
Concerned by the economic recession that has resulted in massive job losses and increase in unemployment in the country, the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) has charted a new policy template for productive employment that would help to reduce the increasing unemployment level in Nigeria.
The body, in supporting Federal Government’s various plans towards job creation, recently came up with a study on Managing the National Unemployment Challenge (MNUC), the findings which it released at a media and stakeholders engagement at its council chambers in Lagos.
Speaking at the event, the President and Chairman of Governing Council, CIPM, Mr. Anthony Arabome, explained that the depth of Nigeria’s unemployment crisis is particularly evident among youths, with two in five youths between the ages 15 and 35 affected.
He noted that the findings from the MNUC study have shown that issues ranging policy inconsistency, poor political governance and setting of policy direction that elicits a harsh business environment, lack of stakeholders’ ownership of employment policy, misalignment of the educational system output and the skill-sets required by current employers of labour are some of the causes of unemployment in the country.
In discussing these findings, Arabome said that a panel of discussants to be led by the office of the Vice President has been set up to examine these issues with a view to helping Nigeria’s employers, HR leaders and practitioners understand their key role in addressing this problem and why it is in their interest to do so at its 2016 annual national conference, which is the 48th in the series, scheduled to hold in Abuja, starting from October 18 with the theme: ‘People; Potentials; Possibilities’.
