Bishop of the Diocese of Ife, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Rt. Rev. Olubunmi Akinlade, has admonished the Federal Government to, in the interim, suspend the planned increase of Value Added Tax (VAT) from its present rate of five per cent to 7.5 per cent.

He said such increase would create more hardship for the struggling Nigerians.

Akinlade, who gave the advice yesterday when he spoke with The Guardian on phone, said government’s reason to effect the increase with a view to funding the new national minimum wage approved by the National Assembly could not be justified now because of what an average Nigerian is passing through.

Besides, the cleric urged President Muhammadu Buhari to promote and vigorously pursue policies that would create jobs so as to reduce unemployment.
