• Lawmaker escapes assassination attempt in Kwara
Organisers of the forthcoming Commonwealth Universities Leaders Conference, initially scheduled to take place from April 23 to 24 in Abuja, have postponed the event due to security concerns.
The conference, convened by the Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies, was to bring together university leaders, policymakers, and education stakeholders from across the Commonwealth to discuss the future of higher education, collaboration, and institutional leadership.
In a statement yesterday, the organisers confirmed that the latest security reports and assessments have necessitated the postponement.
According to the organisers, consultations with key stakeholders, including security agencies, institutional partners, and invited delegates, are underway to determine a new date and venue that ensures the safety and full participation of attendees.
Head, Admin, LOC, Dammy Sanyaolu, said: “The decision reflects our commitment to providing a secure and conducive environment for meaningful engagement.”
The conference remains a priority and will take place once the necessary arrangements are finalised.”
In another development, suspected gunmen have attacked the member representing Edu/ Moro/ Patigi Federal Constituency of Kwara State, Dr Ahmed Adam Saba.
The legislator, who confirmed the incident to newsmen in Ilorin, said he escaped by the whisker.
He has, however, urged the Nigeria Police Force to probe the attack that almost claimed his life.
Saba urged law enforcers not only to probe the attack, “but to also bring both the sponsors and perpetrators to book as a deterrent to others.”
Decrying what he described as a sponsored attack, the lawmaker vowed that the assault would not deter him from serving his people.
Saba said the attack took place at Tsaragi in Edu Local Council of Kwara State, when he was exiting a social function.
