Conjoined twins delivered at LASUTH

A set of conjoined twins, fused at the lower chest and abdomen (thoraco omphalopagus), were delivered today, October 5, 2023, at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja at an estimated gestational age of 33 weeks and six days.

According to the hospital management, the pregnancy was spontaneously conceived and the mother had received antenatal care at a private hospital where the diagnosis was made by ultrasound scan prior to her referral to LASUTH.

“A Magnetic Resonance Imaging done at the BT Diagnostic Centre in LASUTH further confirmed the diagnosis A multidisciplinary team of Radiologists, Neonatologists, Obstetricians, Paediatricians, Paediatric Surgeons, Cardiothoracic Surgeons and Anaesthetists evaluated the case and agreed to proceed with the delivery.

“The conjoined female babies were delivered at 8:26 am with good APGAR Scores and a combined birth weight of 3.8kg. Babies are stable in the Special Care Baby Unit of the Ayinke House. Further evaluation will be carried out by the multidisciplinary team and subsequent management will depend on the investigation findings. The mother is currently stable on the Postnatal Ward,” LASUTH stated.
