Building-collapseCouncil for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has enumerated reasons for rampant building collapse and failure of road projects do not stand the test of time in Nigeria.

Chief inspection officer of the council, Daniel Adown, dropped hint in Lokoja yesterday while during inspection tour of the 16-km Ganaja – Otokiti Village bypass road being constructed by Kogi State Government.

Adown, who was accompanied by other council members on the inspection, said many incidences of collapsed buildings in recent times can be traced to the use of quacks instead of real professionals that will not compromise standards even as he advised Nigerians to desist from patronizing non professionals.
‘One other advice we are giving to our clients is that there are cases when jobs are given to non professionals who do not know anything about them but would sublet the project to those who have the equipment.

The original contractor will like to gain while the one taking the sublet would like to come down to also make some profit,” he added stressing that such misplaced approach impacts negatively on the finished project and quality compromised.

While remarking that the council was established by the federal government to monitor and regulate engineering practice in Nigeria, the inspection officer pointed out that the Lokoja zone of COREN was carrying out one of its ‎functions by inspecting ‎the 16km road to assess the project.

We will also try to see the professionals behind it. Part of our inquiry is to know whether the engineers on site are quacks or properly trained engineers, we will also try to check some of their equipment whether they have a laboratory for testing the quality of job being carried out.

These are some of the things we intend to check so we are here today to carry out inspection on this project,” he declared.
