Corporate sustainability Initiative Brings Environmental Awareness to Ilesa Communities

A sustainability initiative linked to AB InBev’s global environmental goals brought environmental education, tree planting and recycling awareness to communities in Ilesa, Osun State.

Efforts to promote environmental responsibility took a community-focused turn in Ilesa, Osun State, when a sustainability initiative launched during Sustainability Week 2021 extended beyond corporate operations and into local neighbourhoods.

The programme was developed as part of AB InBev’s global Sustainability Goals 2025, which emphasise water stewardship, circular packaging, and climate action. The local initiative was spearheaded by Feyikemi Idowu, Environment and Safety Manager, who proposed using the company’s trained workforce to expand environmental education into surrounding communities.

Rather than limiting sustainability discussions to internal corporate programs, the initiative mobilised employees from multiple manufacturing departments to participate in community outreach efforts. The volunteer team, known as the Better World Champions, coordinated environmental awareness activities across several locations within the city.

Community engagement focused on locations where environmental awareness campaigns could reach diverse audiences.

Educational sessions were organised to help residents better understand the relationship between everyday activities and environmental sustainability. Topics included responsible waste management, recycling practices, and the importance of conserving natural resources.

Organisers say the initiative was designed to make environmental issues easier for residents to relate to in their daily lives.

“People often think sustainability is something distant or abstract,” one participant explained. “But when you show how everyday actions affect the environment, it becomes something everyone can contribute to.”

Alongside the educational outreach, the initiative also introduced practical environmental improvements within the community.

In partnership with officials from the National Environmental Standards and Regulatory Enforcement Agency (NESREA), volunteers participated in a tree planting exercise aimed at promoting environmental restoration.

Infrastructure improvements were also implemented during the program. Water stations in two schools were repaired to improve access to clean water, while waste recycling stations were installed at selected locations to encourage waste segregation and reduce environmental pollution.

Organisers say the initiative demonstrated how corporate sustainability programs can play a role in supporting environmental awareness within the communities where companies operate.

As environmental concerns continue to gain global attention, community-driven initiatives such as the Ilesa program highlight the importance of local engagement in building long-term environmental responsibility.
