A MOBILE court in Benin City yesterday convicted one Ayo Okundaye, a motorist, for attempting to bribe a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)Marshal with N500.

Boboye-OyeyemiA MOBILE court in Benin City yesterday convicted one Ayo Okundaye, a motorist, for attempting to bribe a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)Marshal with N500.

The Magistrate, Friday Igbinosa, found Okundaye guilty of the three-count charge of driving without number plate, forged Driver’s Licence and attempt to bribe FRSC official on duty and ordered him to pay N35,000 for the offences.

The convict, who pleaded guilty to the charges, however, alleged that the money was not a bribe but a gratification.
Igbinosa said act of corruption was a serious offence the present administration frowns at, saying that “even the commission has zero-tolerance for such act.
“I, however, commend you for admitting guilt but must warn you to desist from the act and ensure you go through appropriate quarters to acquire your vehicle particulars and Driver’s Licence in the future,’’ he said.

The magistrate, who marked the N500 note as Exhibit A, ordered the forfeiture of the faked Driver’s Licence to the Federal Government.

Igbinosa also commended the FRSC official for resisting the temptation to receive bribe and urged other marshals to emulate him.
He also tried and convicted 16 other offending motorists for various traffic violations ranging from speed limit, non-use of seatbelt, forged vehicle and driver’s document, overloading among others.
He ordered the confiscation of the forged documents and fined penalties ranging from between N3,000 and N75,000.
