Court denies Shiite leader El-Zakzaky bail

The leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenah,  have been denied bail application by a State High Court in Kaduna on Wednesday.

El-Zakzaky and other members of IMN also known as Shiite had been placed in detention since 2015.

However, the presiding judge, Justice Gideon Kurada, said the accused persons have not shown any substantial medical evidence to grant them bail in their written application.

Kurada, thereafter, adjourned the case to January 22, 2019, for further hearing.

Prior to the court adjournment, scores of Shiite members were allegedly killed and injured during a protest for the release of El-Zakzaky in Abuja on Monday, October 29.

El-Zakzaky was charged with murder in May 2018, after the Nigeria government kept him detained despite an earlier court ruling in December 2016 granting him bail.
