Court remands inspector for killing Okada rider in Ondo 

A police inspector, Mr. Anthony Nwadike, was yesterday remanded in prison custody by a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Akure for allegedly killing a commercial motorcyclist, popularly referred to as Okada rider at Omifon, Odigbo Local Council of Ondo State.

The Guardian gathered that the deceased, Mr. Sunday Joseph, and two other persons were shot by the police officer after an argument ensued among them. The trio were said to be on a motorcycle and met the suspect and some other policemen at a checkpoint.

A source, who pleaded anonymity, narrated that the policeman threw a big stick on the way to stop the motorcycle, which caused the deceased and his passengers to fall off.

This, according to him, resulted into an argument between the deceased and the policemen. And the inspector was irked by the argument, as he advertently shot them.

Late Sunday died on the spot while the two passengers were rushed to the hospital and are still in a critical state.

The charge sheet read: “That you, Nwadike Anthony, 54 years old, on September 4, 2016 about 6p.m. at Omifon, Ondo-Ore road in Ondo Magisterial District, did kill one Sunday Joseph, age 48, by shooting him with riffle on the stomach, resulting to his death, contrary and punishable by section 319, Cap 37, Vol 1 of Ondo Laws, 2006.”

The accused person, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence, but his plea was not taken as the presiding Magistrate, V. Bob-Manuel, in his ruling, ordered that the accused person be remanded in Olokuta Prison. The case was adjourned till October 12, 2016.
