Court remands suspects over killing of NURTW chief, two others
A Magistrate’s Court sitting at Ebute-metta has remanded seven suspects for alleged murder of a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Azeez Otun (a.k.a Ashake) and two others. Those ordered to be remanded in police custody by Chief Magistrate Afolashade Botoku were Ahmadu Kazeem, 43; Ibrahim Afolabi, 37; Lawal Lateef, 27; Anthony Qudus, 33; Adeshina Ibrahim, 28; Adebayo Ogunjimi, 25; and Animashaun Olubodun, 33.
In the remand warrant filed before the court by the men of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department of Lagos State Police Command, Panti-Yaba (CIID), the seven suspects were alleged to have conspired among themselves to kill Otun and two others namely: Rilwan Saka, 19; and Obabiolorunkosi Nurudeen, by shooting them with a gun. The police alleged that the suspects committed the offence on September 20, 2014, at about 6.00p.m., at Enu-owa-Adeniji area of Lagos Island.
Magistrate Botoku ordered that the suspects be remanded in police custody for the first 30 days, to enable the police complete its investigation and adjourned the matter till January 11, 2016. It would be recalled that the late Otun, chairman of Isale-Eko Unit of NURTW and others were allegedly shot dead after a political rally held at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos.
