For the purposes of accountability and transparency, the Federal Government has been urged to institutionalise the participation of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the monitoring of projects nationwide.

Research and Programme Officer, Human Development Initiative (HDI), Olayemi Samuel, made the submission in Abuja, during a courtesy visit to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), where he stressed the need to institutionalise CSOs’ participation in monitoring of UBEC projects.

Samuel who disclosed that a research conducted by the body in Lagos State revealed that contractors actually complied with projects’ specification, as contained in the action plan, however, lamented that there was no correlation between the duration specified in the action plan and the time of execution of contracts.

“We need approval from the UBEC so that we don’t have to go to states before we can get approval to monitor projects because as it is now, we are working in three states, that is Kano and Lagos states as well as, the FCT where we have gotten approval to monitor projects.”

On his part, the Kano State chairman of School-based Management Committee (SBMC), Tijani Haladu Baraya, said the major challenge in the state remains inadequate infrastructure.

In his response, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi assured the bodies that the commission would do everything possible to ensure quality delivery of projects by contractors, as well as, institutionalising CSOs participation in UBEC project monitoring.
