THE havoc wreaked last week by two rival cult groups in the erstwhile calm community of Ovwian in Udu Local Council of Delta State, is still taking its toll despite the launch of manhunt by the police for the leaders of the cult groups.

A violent fight broke out in Ovwian Community, Udu Local Council, last Wednesday night following disagreement between members of two secret cult groups, Baga and Dominion, which resulted in the destruction of three cars, community town hall and the death of a middle-aged man identified as Mr. Erhuvwun Kebe.

The Guardian learnt that members of the Dominion cult group, led by one Mr. Righteous Sabuke, allegedly invaded the home of the leader of the Baga cult group, identified as Whayenkufia Kebe, but did not meet him at home. On their way back, they met his younger brother, Mr. Erhuvwun Kebe at NBTC Junction in Ovwian and allegedly clubbed him to death with dangerous weapons.

Irked by the killing of his younger brother allegedly in the presence of local vigilance outfit, Mr. Whayenkufia Kebe, leader of the Baga group in collaboration with his cult members and relations, stormed the Ovwian town hall, which also serves as office of the community vigilance outfit and burnt three cars, vandalized all the windows, doors, chairs and carted away some valuable electronics belonging to the community.

The President General of Ovwian community, Paul Odiete, and Alfred Urhukpe, Oghwuvwie General of Ovwian community stated that as a result of the destruction of the town hall and the burning of the three cars, “we mobilized our boys and apprehended 13 boys in connection with the incident and handed them over to the police at Ovwian Police Station.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer, Celestina Kalu, said she has not been briefed about the incident.

However, a police source at the Ovwian / Aladja Police Station confirmed the story, saying that the police was on the hunt of other suspects in connection with the incident.
