The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced that the newly introduced automation of the overtime cargo clearance system (E-Platforms) will eliminate bottlenecks and challenges associated with manual paperwork, abandoned cargo, and delays in trade facilitation at the nation’s ports.
Zonal Coordinator of NCS, Zone C, Kamal Mohammed, made this known during a one-day sensitisation exercise for consignees, Customs brokers, terminal operators and officers at Onne Port, Rivers State. He was represented by the Customs Area Controller, Port Harcourt Area II, Onne, Comptroller Aliyu Alkali.
Mohammed explained that the digital platform provides a seamless clearance process that enhances economic activities at the ports without requiring physical presence. He noted that it allows stakeholders to conduct trade processes remotely, thereby reducing congestion and delays.
Describing the initiative as a new phase for the maritime sector, Mohammed highlighted its transparency, efficiency, and accountability, stressing that it will resolve long-standing obstacles in cargo clearance.
He urged stakeholders in the maritime industry to familiarise themselves with the system and work closely with Customs officers to promptly address any issues that may arise.
