In a move aimed at inspiring the next generation of public servants and strengthening civic awareness among young Nigerians, the Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has opened its doors to students of Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Dakata, Kano, for an educational excursion designed to provide firsthand insight into the operations of the Service.
The visit, which took place at the Command Headquarters in Bompai, Kano, formed part of efforts by the Service to engage young people and expose them to career opportunities within public institutions while promoting values of patriotism, leadership and national development.
Addressing the students during the visit, the Acting Customs Area Controller of the Kano/Jigawa Area Command, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Usman Adamu, highlighted the strategic role played by the Nigeria Customs Service in supporting economic growth, securing the nation’s borders and facilitating legitimate trade.
According to him, the Service’s responsibilities extend beyond revenue collection and anti-smuggling operations, noting that institutions such as Customs also have a responsibility to inspire young people and contribute to the development of future leaders.
He encouraged the students to remain committed to their education and personal development, stressing that many individuals currently occupying leadership positions in both the public and private sectors once benefited from similar opportunities for mentorship and guidance during their formative years.
Adamu noted that exposing students to the workings of government institutions can help broaden their career aspirations and deepen their understanding of the role public service plays in national development. He added that the Service remains committed to initiatives that encourage young Nigerians to become active contributors to the country’s progress.
The educational tour provided the students with an opportunity to learn about the functions of the Nigeria Customs Service, including revenue generation, trade facilitation, border management and enforcement activities. Officials of the Command also interacted with the students, providing explanations on how the agency contributes to national security and economic stability.
Speaking on behalf of the school, Principal Nusaiba Umar commended the Command for hosting the students and creating an environment that allowed them to gain practical knowledge outside the classroom. She described the long-standing relationship between the school and the Customs Command as mutually beneficial and valuable in shaping the perspectives of young learners.
According to her, the excursion was organised to expose the students to real-life experiences within public institutions, enabling them to better understand leadership, responsibility and service to the nation.
The students also expressed appreciation for the opportunity, describing the visit as both educational and inspiring. Speaking on behalf of her colleagues, Zainab Tahir said the excursion offered a unique learning experience that expanded their understanding of the Nigeria Customs Service and motivated them to pursue their ambitions with greater determination.
The visit underscores a growing recognition among public institutions of the importance of youth engagement as a tool for nation-building, mentorship and the development of future leaders capable of contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s growth and development.
