Defence chief urges Nigerians to report security personnel misconduct

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has called on Nigerians to report any misconduct by security personnel, assuring that appropriate actions will be taken to address such concerns.

Speaking to reporters after a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Friday, General Musa highlighted ongoing efforts by the federal government to strengthen the country’s security apparatus.

“You will always want to wonder why some individuals are happy with things going bad in their country. If Nigeria is destroyed, all of us will go down, so we must work with the Armed Forces and security agencies. If you see something going wrong, let us report it, even our own personnel. If you see them doing anything wrong, please report them, and action will be taken,” he said.

He explained that the meeting focused on reviewing the nation’s overall security situation amid increasing threats linked to terrorist activities in the Sahel region, which have spilled into Nigeria through porous borders.

“Our meeting today was to review the entire security situation in the country. The president is concerned about what is going on, and we have assured him that we are working very hard to address the security situation. What has happened recently is that there is a global push by terrorists and Jihadists all over the Sahel area, and that pressure is what actually came into Nigeria because of the nature of our borders,” Musa noted.

The Chief of Defence Staff said President Tinubu has directed enhanced collaboration with neighboring countries to manage cross-border security threats and has approved the acquisition of additional security equipment, including air assets.

“Mr. President has given us a directive to collaborate with all of sister countries because it is pressure at the borders that is aggravating our issues on ground, so all our theatres have been enhanced and equipment have been bought.

Mr. President has also given us approval for air assets and other assets of security and just like we said, it is not just the kinetic efforts are vital, but also the non-kinetics as well,” he added.

General Musa further stated that the president is engaging state governors to support efforts aimed at ensuring that democratic dividends reach local communities, which is crucial to curbing insecurity.

“We are working with all the security agencies to make sure that Nigeria is safe and peaceful. This is our mandate, and this we would work towards. We want to appeal to all Nigerians not to get tired, and they should be wary of fake news. Most of the videos being circulated are videos from other countries and they are old videos,” he said.

The Chief of Defence Staff stressed the importance of cooperation among all tiers of government and within communities.

He stated that they are collaborating with all governors, acknowledging their inability to achieve peace independently, and are urging state and local governments, as well as communities, to participate. He emphasized that everyone has a role in ensuring peace in Nigeria.

He expressed satisfaction that Nigerians are embracing the initiative and dismissing negative voices, asserting their confidence in succeeding and reassuring all citizens.
