Delta seeks for support from FG, NEMA to tackle flooding

The Delta Government on Wednesday called on the Federal Government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist the state in addressing the challenges posed by flood.

The Deputy Governor, Mr Kingsley Utuaro, made the call during an inspector visit to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Asaba.

Utuaro, who is also the Chairman of the State Flood Committee, called on well-meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations to support the state government in addressing the impact of flooding on residents of Delta.

He said that the support would lessen the suffering experienced by those displaced from their various home by flood.

“In Asaba camp alone, we have more than 250 persons in the camp and most of them are children and women who are more vulnerable to flooding.

“And as we speak, we have lost two persons to the flood already,” he said.

Utuaro said that the state government could not handle the challenge of the flooding alone, adding that the state government had been doing its best in ensuring that the people of the state were adequately protected.

“The state had also put a lot of modality in place in order to ensure the safety of the people,” he added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the committee also visited Phase II area of Infant Jesus Road which was also submerged by the flood.

According to the committee, the victims are relocated to temporary sites in various Local Government areas in Delta
NAN recalls that the flood had affected Oshimili South, Ndokwa East, Burutu, Bomadi, Patani and Ughelli South Local Government areas of Delta.
