The United States chapter of the ruling party (APC-USA) has called on Nigerians to remain committed to defending democratic values and supporting the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the country marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In a statement issued by its chairman, Prof. Tai Balofin, APC-USA described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a reminder of the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists and citizens in the struggle for civil rule.
The group congratulated President Tinubu, whom it described as one of the leading figures in Nigeria’s democratic struggle, and commended his administration’s efforts to reposition the country through ongoing economic and governance reforms.
According to APC-USA, June 12 symbolizes the resilience, courage and determination of Nigerians who fought for democratic governance, stressing that citizens must continue to play active roles in strengthening democratic institutions and protecting the nation’s democratic gains.
While acknowledging the economic hardships facing many Nigerians, the group urged citizens to exercise patience and support policies aimed at achieving long-term economic growth and national development. It argued that sustainable reforms often require difficult but necessary sacrifices.
Prof. Balofin expressed confidence that President Tinubu’s policies would ultimately create opportunities, improve living standards and place the country on a stronger development path. He maintained that despite existing challenges in governance and the electoral system, Nigeria’s democracy remains worth defending and strengthening.
The APC-USA chairman also urged political leaders across party lines to put national interest above personal and partisan considerations in the pursuit of national development.
The group further called on the National Orientation Agency to intensify public enlightenment efforts, particularly among young people, to improve awareness of government programmes and initiatives targeted at youth empowerment and national development.
