‘Despite anti-corruption crusade, rot persists’

CorruptionDespite acclaimed crusade against societal ills and corruption, Nigeria has achieved little, suffers severe moral decadence, and religious bodies are wanting in their responsibilities, the Bishop of Diocese of Owerri Anglican Communion Church, Dr. Cyril Chukwunoenyerem Okorocha, has said.

Okorocha, in a lecture titled Presidential Address, to mark the first session of the 20th Diocesan Synod, held at the St. John’s Anglican Church, New Owerri, Imo State, regretted that, despite condemnation of oppression, tyranny and unbridled corruption among others, the vices persist in the country.

Calling for a change for the better, he noted that the conduct of leaders in churches and governments should cause Nigerians to demand exemplary lifestyles and a commitment to ethos of good governance.

According to him, “When you complain against oppression and tyranny, unbridled corruption, hypocrisy, dishonesty, and total lack of transparency in both the church and the state in Nigeria, you lose both your head and your neck. Our oppressors lack conscience and our leaders don’t have the fear of God and regard for accountability.”
