Diaspora innovation: Nigerian legal mind champions AI concept to reform US justice system

As artificial intelligence reshapes industries from finance to healthcare, a Nigerian legal innovator in the diaspora is channeling that power into one of the most urgent public missions of our time: justice reform.

Meekness Ikeh, a Nigerian-born legal professional and privacy expert, is leading efforts to design MARTHA—Machine-Assisted Review Tool for Honest Assessments—a visionary AI-powered legal assistant concept that aims to support U.S. prosecutors in reviewing wrongful conviction claims.

The idea for MARTHA was born from Ikeh’s experience volunteering with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) in 2024, where she observed firsthand the crushing caseloads and resource challenges that slow down the pursuit of justice for the wrongfully convicted.

“Justice isn’t just about the law—it’s about having the right tools to uncover the truth in time,” said Ikeh. “MARTHA is an effort to bring responsible AI to that mission.”

Still in development, MARTHA is envisioned as a platform that integrates Optical Character Recognition (OCR), natural language processing, and Explainable AI (XAI) to help automate and enhance key aspects of post-conviction review.

From scanning inmate petitions and summarizing case files to flagging inconsistencies in witness testimony, the tool would support CIU attorneys in identifying cases that may warrant deeper investigation. It is also designed with privacy-by-design principles to align with data protection standards like the CCPA and CJIS guidelines.

Through her legal scholarship, privacy leadership, and her podcast Corporate Governance Insights, Ikeh continues to drive conversations around transparent, ethical technology in public institutions, especially in areas where the stakes are highest.

“MARTHA isn’t just a legal tech tool, it’s a bridge,” Ikeh explains. “A bridge between governance and justice, between innovation and integrity.”

As policymakers and technologists around the world grapple with how to responsibly integrate AI into legal systems, diaspora-led innovations like MARTHA show that some of the boldest ideas are being born at the crossroads of cultures, disciplines, and lived experiences.
